overall personality,
Arrogance: Above all else, Lucius Malfoy sees himself and the members of his family as superior, in that they are part of the pureblood elite. As such, he carries himself with dignity and has a rather inflated impression of his own self-importance, often leading him to make disparaging remarks about others people's place in society (especially those of what he considers to be 'of inferior blood').
Pride: One often finds that arrogance and pride go hand in hand. Being that Lucius is also a member of the social and political elite, he carries himself with dignity and takes great pride in himself and his family (and their subsequent deeds). Above all else, he believes in taking pride in one's family name and, as such, does whatever he can to keep from sullying his own. He expects the same level of dedication and care from his wife and son.
Familial Relations: Lucius shares rather interesting bonds with his family, keeping close to a number of members whilst trying to forget that others (the Tonks' for example) exist. As far as his wife and child go however, Lucius values them quite highly, though he might not show or admit to it openly beyond lording them with access to what appears to be an infinite amount of money. Though married for convenience / the sake of retaining their unsullied blood status and further uniting the great houses of Malfoy and Black, Lucius truly does care for his wife and does what he can to ensure her happiness and safety, even if outwardly he seems quite distant. His son, on the other hand, tends to bear the brunt of his expectations.
While Narcissa is expected to be the perfect wife and hostess, Lucius expects Draco to follow in his footsteps. To that end, he often scolds Draco for gaining marks lower than that of Hermione Granger, a mere muggleborn and constantly pushes him to achieve more and more in terms of academic knowledge and status within the Dark Lord's order. He favors his son above all others (often spoiling him) and cannot bear the thought of Draco being killed and thereby ending the Malfoy line.
On the other hand, he absolutely despises the Tonks's and often attempts to deny/forget about their existence, and he doesn't particularly care for his relatives on Narcissa's side of the family, though he tolerates them well enough with the exception of Bellaxtrix, whom he absolutely cannot stand for all that she constantly accuses him of a number of disreputable and disrespectful things (being a
fair weather' follower of the Dark Lord, for one).
Cruelty: Lucius has a cruel streak a mile wide, delighting in the verbal abuse of various individuals as well as the physical torture and eventual murder of those individuals he deems inferior (mainly muggles and muggleborns). He has a particular knack for the the imperius and cruciatus curses respectively and doesn't exactly use them sparingly.
Ambition: This is, perhaps, one of Lucius's most defining traits. Ambition governs all that he is and all that he does, as Lucius is constantly climbing political and social ladders, looking for more and more power and influence that he might lord over others. To this end he has worked his way up to a position of power (as well as a number of powerful allies) within the Ministry, obtained a seat on Hogwarts Governors' Board, and worked his way up through the ranks of Voldemort's faithful. He is constantly currying favor with those in positions of power and constantly cursing the necessity of such currying, which he sees as undignified and, on some level, beneath him.
Prejudice: As mentioned earlier, Lucius is very particular about blood status. He thinks of muggles, muggleborns, and halfbloods in much the same way (with very few exceptions), as individuals who need to be eradicated for the good of wizarding society. He believes that pureblood witches and wizards are naturally and infinitely superior to those of what he calls 'lesser blood' and that a perfect wizarding society would one without the taint of muggle influence.
Charisma: Few social climbers get far without charisma and Lucius is, if nothing else, a naturally gifted speaker and leader (and being of noble blood certainly doesn't hurt). A smooth talker and a quick study, Lucius has a number of ways to win over fellow witches es and wizards and, if charisma alone isn't enough, money is always an option.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

overall history,
Lucius grew up without a mother, his own having died in childbirth. His father, Abraxas Malfoy, was therefore the most prominent influence in his life. Abraxas was something of a cruel man and his expectations regarding his only son ranged from the easily attainable to the impossible. Never spared a solid beating for failing to excel in all that he endeavored to do, Lucius strove to surpass all of his father's expectations, earning top grades while studying at Hogwarts, becoming a key member of the Slug Club, and serving as a prefect during his fifth through seventh years. In the process of meeting and exceeding said expectations, he gained a number of powerful allies/lackeys. Among them was Severus Snape, whom he befriended during a dark time in the boy's life. Within his own house and became known as the prince of Slytherin.
As it was, many of Lucius's beliefs about blood status come from his father, who was a wealthy ministry worker and leading advocate of 'blood cleansing' in his prime. Abraxas's blood doctrine was drilled into Lucius's head at a very young age, leaving the boy with an inflated sense of self-importance that followed him into his adult years.
After graduating from Hogwarts (and the death of his father at the hands of dragon pox), Lucius took a secretarial job at the ministry, using his considerable the wealth left to him by his father to generate influence and climb the ranks until finally securing himself a position on the Governors Board and a lofty place within the Ministry itself. In this manner he has since won over not only a number of ministry department heads, but also the minister of magic himself. In fact, very few department heads seem to dislike Lucius, with the exception of Arthur Weasley, with whom he has formed a sort of rivalry (that Lucius himself would, of course, never admit).
However, the ministry was not the only thing that interested him. Lucius's love of power also led him to join the Dark Lord's crusade for purity and world domination, and he found early on that he not only shared the Dark Lord's beliefs, but that he, himself, made for a particularly useful member of the fold and was thus entitled to additional influence within it (provided he continued to keep the Dark Lord's favor).
Over the years, Lucius has done much evil in the service of the Dark Lord, targeting ministry officials and order members alike, using his influence and his dark allies to assert some level control over a great portion of the wizarding world from the shadows. Each time he visits the minister, a new ministry official is put under the imperius curse and readied to serve the Dark Lord against their will. Each time he visits Hogwarts, he comes bearing bad news (Dumbledore is to be removed from the office, Buckbeak is to be killed, and so forth), every bit of it orchestrated by Lucius himself through the subtle combination of wealth threats. As Draco has now reached the age where he might join Lucius in his service to the Dark Lord, he is looking forward to seeing what his son can accomplish and what power and status he might gain. The Malfoy name, after all, must be preserved, further elevated, and strengthened.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Gone was the radiant girl who’d stolen his heart, and in her place stood a woman whose once brilliant green eyes had dulled considerably. Signs of a rough beginning made themselves readily apparent, dark circles beneath eyes that were halfway to being bloodshot from lack of sleep and certain added paleness to her skin. There was little doubt in Severus’s mind as to whether or not this had to do with the students. No, newly hired or not, dealing with children had always been something that Lily Potter had had a particular knack for.
Children…it was readily apparently why she had come, it was for the same reason that he’d been going about his days like an automaton, teaching without thinking, drowning himself in a potent mixture of rotten essays and top of the line firewhiskey, trying not to catch her eye at the Head Table, the only time he allowed himself to come into contact with her…and even then he had refrained from actually speaking with her. Some part of him, a damned foolish part, he acknowledged, had been hoping that she’d be willing to let it go, to leave things as they were and make do with what she had. He much preferred the chilling silence that had fallen between them to the thought of facing off with her while she was driven by emotion, as she would undoubtedly be if they were to discuss the subject of his son…their son.
The night on which he was conceived had carried with it a fervent hope that things might change, that against all odds everything would go back to the way it had been during their schooling days. Foolish thoughts that he assumed he’d managed to banish for good, a carefully constructed mask of callousness, and a façade meant to make her despise him – always kept up with the greatest difficulty – had been swept aside the second he’d opened the door and gotten a good look at her. Eyes ringed red from crying, skin too pale, tears drying on her cheeks in salty little trails even as more continued to fall, body trembling in his arms later as he held her, comforted her. Even he had not been able harden his heart enough to abandon her when she had been in need, when she had gone out of her way to come to him, not one of her little friends in the order, not Dumbledore, not James bloody ‘thinks he’s a god’ Potter or the ever ready to console Lupin, but him. It had been a moment of weakness for the both of them, one that they had shared in the only way that two desperate individuals knew how, by making a mistake.
Since then he’d tried to put the incident from his mind, a task that had become all but impossible from the first moment he’d spied familiar green eyes staring back at him from the Head Table as he’d entered the Great Hall for the first meal of the new school year. From that moment on he found himself reminiscing against his better judgment, unable to put from his mind the feel of skin and the smell of her hair. Images of their two bodies lying entwined on dark sheets invaded his mind whenever he was alone, but more than anything, he recalled the small smile of gratitude that she’d given him when he held her for the first time in forever, the smile that had left him hoping against hope itself that things might be different – a child’s hope. That hope and the smile both had died with the morning.
A mistake she had called the previous night, as he’d known she would, known but had not been willing to admit until he’d been proven correct. Merlin how he’d wanted her to stay as he’d watched her flee from him, from what they’d done. It wasn’t the first time a chance at happiness had walked away from him, Lily Potter had made the act an art form, one that left him feeling like a blank canvas that was simply waiting for her to paint it with emotion, that would bear the agony of loving her for the idea of moments that he knew full-well would never come. It wasn’t the first time, but it was just as painful, and it wasn’t likely to be the last time either.
As she spoke, Severus found himself drawn back into the present, worried for a moment that he’d let something slip in the set of his shoulders, which tensed the moment she spoke. Never mind the fact that his gaze briefly bore traces of the sorrow that had been haunting him since the night she’d left. Thankfully, when he looked up, Lily appeared to be staring pointedly at anything but him, unwilling or unable to look him in the eye.
Yes, hate the man who has taken your child from you. Disregard the fact that the boy is just as much mine as he is yours, that I have as much of a right to raise him as you do. The words that needed to be said stuck in his throat as he took in her sullen almost fearful appearance. Inwardly, he cursed himself for his own weakness. ”I promise you I have better things to occupy my time than going out of my way to avoid a colleague” he replied curtly. Yes, a colleague, nothing more than a colleague, that was good. It smacked of untruth, but it was good. Let her think she meant nothing to him, that that night had meant nothing to him. It was for the best.
Beneath the desk, where his hands had fallen the moment he realized that he’d not be getting any grading done until she’d said her peace, Severus’s hands tensed, gripping at his robe. The rest of his appearance, however, bore few signs of agitation. He forced his shoulders to relax and gazed at her with the same amount of annoyance that he reserved for any given individual who interrupted him while he was working. He could control himself. He would control himself and be rid of her as soon as humanly possible. ‘We need to talk Severus.’ Inwardly, he winced. Already they would be starting this conversation on her terms, in dangerous territory. For Merlin’s sake, why couldn’t she leave it alone? “And what is it, exactly, that we have to discuss?” He prided himself on the fact that he didn’t choke on the words as he spoke. Instead, they came out with the customary, clipped evenness for which he was known.- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
